Schedule, Learning Experience & Graduation

How much time should I dedicate to Health Coach Certification each week?
The average student spends 7 to 10 hours per week attending all required live sessions, watching the pre-recorded lessons, practicing with their peers, reading the study guides and taking the weekly comprehension quizzes.
When are the required Health Coach Certification live classes?
Great question! The required live classes take place every Tuesday and Thursday. You can choose to attend at 12 PM or 6 PM Eastern Time, and each session is 90 minutes long. There’s also an optional (but highly recommended) Coaching Triad on Wednesdays, offered at the same times. Would any of these times work for you?
What are coaching triads?
These are live practice sessions where students work in small groups of three and rotate roles as Coach, Client, and Observer. As the Coach, you’ll practice real coaching techniques in a supportive environment. As the Client, you’ll experience being coached and gain insights into your own growth. As the Observer, you’ll take notes and share feedback, noticing what makes a session effective. After each practice round, everyone returns to the main room to share takeaways, ask questions, and receive guidance from faculty. It's a very rich learning experience!
What happens if I miss a live class?
We have a simple make-up process, which includes watching the recording of the class you missed and then choosing another day where you will attend two live classes in one day (the AM and PM sessions). This allows you to make up the required live instructional hours needed for graduation. We don't have a set requirement for how many absences are permitted, but we don't recommend more than four.
Are orientation sessions and support circles required, and can I watch recordings?
Yes, orientation sessions and support circles are required! The good news is that you can attend them live or watch the recordings in your dashboard afterward. Required live lectures have different attendance requirements.
How many students are typically in a Health Coach Certification cohort and live class?
There are typically around 150 students per cohort, with approximately 75 in each live session across two session times. Cohort sizes may vary, so an advisor can confirm the expected size for your start date.
What are the Health Coach Certification graduation requirements?
To graduate, you'll need 100% attendance, completion of all lessons and assessments, and a passing score on the final exam. Graduating from this program qualifies you to take the NBHWC certification exam.
Who teaches Health Coach Certification?
Our entire faculty is board-certified health coaches with hundreds of hours of coaching and teaching experience. What is particularly great about our faculty is that they all come from very different paths into health coaching - which gives our students a wide range of very practical perspectives about what health coaching really looks like in different settings. One of our faculty members was an RN for 30 years before becoming a board-certified health coach. Another was an addiction counselor in a hospital setting for a decade before becoming a board-certified health coach. One is a yoga and meditation teacher as well, another was a completely career switcher from tech and another comes from corporate HR and made the switch.

Curriculum & Coaching Skills

Does Health Coach Certification cover nutrition?
Within the program, there is a week on nutrition where you will learn how to coach clients through nutrition goals. The good news is, you will also get complimentary access to the Nutrition & Longevity+ program, which includes more than 30 hours of nutrition content so you can learn how food is medicine and the role food plays in any health issue your clients may be facing.
How deeply does Health Coach Certification cover lifestyle factors?
The Lifestyle Factors weeks are extremely deep, the deepest of the entire course. You will get many hours of education (pre-recorded videos, live lectures, practice coaching sessions, extremely detailed study guides) for each topic. Our program offers more hours on each of these topics than other programs out there because these topics are so important.
How is spirituality addressed in Health Coach Certification?
When we talk about spirituality in the program, we’re referring to a broad and inclusive approach — not tied to religion or any specific belief. It’s more about connecting with purpose, inner peace, and meaning in life. Some people explore this through practices like mindfulness, breathwork, or prayer, but it’s always personalized and respectful of each person’s background and values.
Does Health Coach Certification teach mind-body tools?
The only mind-body tools in the curriculum are taught from a very straightforward, science-backed evidence-based approach. No influence of any kind other than how certain ways of breathing impact the nervous system which can help clients integrate behavior changes in a more accessible way.
Does Health Coach Certification teach how to coach around nutrition and addictive behaviors?
The curriculum will include healthy eating habits during the Nutrition week and how to coach through addicting behaviors during the addiction week. The focus will always be on behavior change and the skills you learn in that area can be used for many topics. There will be some areas that are outside of the scope of a health coach and you’ll learn when it’s appropriate to refer out to other experts.
What business and marketing support does Health Coach Certification include?
We offer a 1-month Marketing, Business & Mindset course with Jennifer Grace. You’ll define your niche, build your brand, plan your website, create a lead magnet, and learn to network & collaborate. It also includes mindset work (overcoming imposter syndrome, procrastination, and money blocks), worksheets, checklists, and step-by-step actions to attract your first clients. We help you think through your website, though we don’t teach the technical steps of building one.
Does Health Coach Certification teach students to build a website?
We’ll help you think through what your website needs and how it fits into your business, but we don’t teach the technical steps of building a website. You’ll also have access to an alumni session to help you plan your next steps.
What is the Health Coach Certification final exam format?
The final exam is multiple choice over several hours, which closely mirrors what the board exam looks like. This is by design so you are really prepared for the board exam. There is no coaching session, which is also the case for the board exam.

Board Certification & Exam

What is the NBHWC?
The National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) has partnered with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to create a standardized curriculum and board exam to represent the rigorous training that health coaches must complete to become board certified.
What are the eligibility requirements for the NBHWC board exam?
To apply for the NBHWC board exam, you’ll need to complete an approved program (like ours), have 4,000 hours of work experience in any field (it doesn’t have to be health-related), and log 50 eligible coaching sessions.
How do I complete the 50 coaching sessions for the board exam?
You can begin completing the 50 coaching sessions required for the NBHWC board exam after Week 18 of the program. Each session must be at least 20 minutes long and completed with an eligible client. During the program, we train you on how to find and work with clients and support you through that process, but the sessions themselves are completed independently. Many students find practice clients through their own network or peer connections, and some start with free sessions to build experience.
Does MBG provide practice clients?
We don’t provide the clients directly, but we do give you everything you need to find them — including step-by-step guidance, scripts, and tools to help you confidently get practice clients. Plus, there’s a super supportive resource-sharing system in your cohort. Since you can’t coach friends/family, students share contacts they can't use — to help one another find eligible practice clients.
How much does the NBHWC board exam cost?
The NBHWC board exam has a $100 application fee and a $400 testing fee. You can find the application details here: https://nbhwc.org/fee-policy/.
Does Health Coach Certification tuition include the NBHWC board exam fee?
No, the NBHWC board exam fees are separate from your Health Coach Certification tuition. The exam has a $100 application fee and a $400 testing fee.
What continuing education is required to maintain NBHWC board certification?
Board-certified health coaches need 36 hours of continuing education every three years. You can explore continuing education opportunities and renewal information through the NBHWC.
Does Health Coach Certification guarantee that I will pass the NBHWC board exam?
We’ll help you prepare for the NBHWC board exam, but passing isn’t guaranteed. Our board-exam pass rate is 92%, and the program includes exam preparation to help you feel ready.

Health Coaching Scope & Career Paths

What can a health coach do, and what is outside their scope?
As a health coach, your role is to support and empower clients to make sustainable lifestyle and behavior changes. You won’t be able to diagnose, treat, or recommend specific functional tests or supplements, but you’ll be trained to guide clients through goal setting, habit change, and holistic wellness strategies.
How is health coaching different from registered dietetics?
A dietician is actually licensed in each state to give custom meal plans for each client whereas a health coach (and what you will learn in our nutrition program) is only able to share nutrition and food resources with their clients and coach around behavior change as it relates to implementing those food resources.
How is Health Coach Certification different from holistic nursing?
Great question. Holistic nursing is a clinical practice with a medical scope — nurses can assess, diagnose, and treat. Our Health Coach Certification trains you in behavior change and lifestyle support, not clinical care. It's often used alongside nursing credentials to expand how you support patients. Are you a nurse currently?
Does Health Coach Certification teach me to interpret lab results or prescribe meal plans?
Health Coach Certification trains students in health coaching and behavior change, not in diagnosing conditions, ordering or interpreting medical tests, or prescribing individualized meal plans. Licensed healthcare professionals may have a separate scope of practice based on their own credentials.
Where can Health Coach Certification graduates work?
Health coaching is flexible, and grads go into a variety of sectors—clinical settings, private practice, corporate wellness, or education. For example, nurses often go into clinical roles, while career-switchers might start their own business or work in wellness programs. What are you most drawn to?
What job titles should I search for as a health coach?
One thing that helps a lot when job searching in this field: don't just search "Health Coach." A lot of relevant roles use different titles, like Wellness Coach, Health Educator, Population Health Coach, Care Coach, Chronic Disease Coach, Patient Coach, or Nurse Coach. Searching only the exact phrase "Health Coach" means you'll miss a big chunk of what's actually out there.
How long does a health coaching client relationship typically last?
It absolutely varies by client and how frequently you are working together as well as their goals and their availability. In this program you will learn what the structure of a coaching relationship looks like and you will work with several clients so you’ll have a good understanding of it by the end of the program. We also have extensive alumni support to help graduates figure out what services to offer, how long their packages should be, what they should charge for them, etc. So you are supported all along the way.
Can I work internationally after becoming a board-certified health coach?
The NBHWC credential may be relevant to health coaching opportunities beyond the United States, but requirements for practicing, using professional titles, or providing services vary by location. Please check the rules that apply where you plan to work.
Do I need professional liability insurance to work as a health coach?
Yes, you should arrange appropriate professional liability coverage before you begin practicing. The Health Coach Certification program does not include an insurance policy, but we cover how to explore coverage options.
Can my health coaching clients use HSA or FSA funds to pay for sessions?
Yes, clients may be able to use HSA or FSA funds for health coaching sessions, depending on their plan and eligibility requirements. They should check with their HSA or FSA administrator before paying.
How do clients usually pay for health coaching sessions?
It depends on where you work! Clients may pay out of pocket, and some health coaching services may be covered by insurance in clinical settings through a licensed provider’s billing arrangements. If you open your own practice, you shouldn’t assume you can bill insurance directly. Clients may also be able to use HSA or FSA funds, depending on their plan and eligibility requirements.
